Hidden Gems for Travel Nurses to Explore

When most travel nurses start planning their next assignment, their minds often go straight to the big-name destinations like Denver, San Diego, or Boston. But as Sarah, Ventura MedStaff’s Director of Nursing and Allied Health Client Management, points out, there’s so much more of the country to explore. As a healthcare staffing agency, we know that travel nursing hidden gems exist all over the United States, and travel nurses have the unique opportunity to explore them all! Choosing a smaller, less-traveled location can open up new opportunities — both for adventure and for your career.

Why Travel Nursing Hidden Gems Matter

Travel Nursing hidden gems might not be well-known, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be beautiful. Beyond the scenery, these lesser-known locations often come with professional perks. Sarah explained that “The benefits of exploring smaller destinations include a better chance of landing an assignment because there’s often less competition for those jobs.” In addition, because these smaller facilities rely on travelers, they often are very supportive of them. “These facilities are used to travelers and can be more understanding and flexible working with them,” Sarah emphasized.

Not only that, but smaller facilities often form a deeper connection with their client manager. “So, we know more about their community through them and what there is to do, Sarah said. That local connection also means recruiters can better match travelers to locations that fit their lifestyle. “We know what travelers work and don’t,” she explained, referring to how those close partnerships help ensure a great fit for both sides.

Traveler Favorites: The Midwest

When asked which regions stand out as travel nursing hidden gems, Sarah immediately brought up the Midwest. “We’re from the Midwest, and we staff a lot of great people there,” she said. “Iowa especially stands out — but really, the whole Midwest from North Dakota to Texas offers wonderful opportunities.”

She also highlighted the culture of kindness that defines the region. “Midwest nice is a real thing,” Sarah said with a smile. “These facilities are incredibly traveler-friendly. They’re used to having travelers and appreciate the extra hands.” And it’s because of that warm, welcoming culture, many travelers request to return to the same facilities again and again.

Seasonal Travel Nursing Hidden Gems Worth Considering

As the leaves start to change and the weather cools, Sarah suggested a few regions that are often overlooked but offer amazing experiences. “The upper East Coast is beautiful, especially New Hampshire,” she said. “Go there in August through November — and if you like snow, you can stay through the winter.”

She also mentioned Alaska as a must-see destination. “It’s starting to get dark out this time of year,” she said, “but it’s such a cool place to be.” States like Minnesota and Michigan are also hard to beat. “There’s so much to do there,” Sarah explained. “I’m an outdoor person, but if you’re more of a history buff, the East Coast is amazing. Really, go where your interests take you.”

Above all, Sarah encourages travel nurses to stay curious and open-minded when exploring new destinations. “Go back to why you started traveling in the first place,” she said. “If you’re an avid mountain biker, skier, you enjoy the sites, no matter what, there are hidden gems all across the country perfect for you.”
