Advice from Ventura MedStaff’s Head of Sales and Training
Travel healthcare is all about timing, flexibility, and knowing how to make the most of each season. Whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned traveler, every assignment brings a chance to grow professionally while exploring a new corner of the country. With summer on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about your next move and what you need to know to make it a successful one.
We sat down with Brian, our Head of Sales and Training, to get his best advice for those looking to take on a summer assignment this year.
Why Is Summer a Great Time for Travel?
“Summer opens up opportunities on so many levels,” Brian said. “There are always seasonal illnesses, so demand increases. But beyond that, summer is when a lot of travelers want to mix work with play. You get to explore new places, enjoy the sunshine, and take full advantage of the warmer temperatures.”
Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, relaxing on the beach, or strolling through a new city after your shift, summer gives you more time to enjoy life outside the hospital walls.
When Should Travelers Start Planning Their Summer Assignment?
“For the most part, many travelers will start planning their summer assignment when the previous year comes to an end,” Brian said. Travelers will secure their winter assignment and plan out where they want to go for spring, and how that best sets them up for summer. “Even if it’s a summer assignment or it’s going home for the summer, planning ahead is important,” Brian reminded.
And for those who are newer to travel and just now starting to think about a summer assignment, it’s time to start talking to a recruiter as soon as possible. “The sooner, the better,” Brian emphasized. He also stressed the importance of licensure and compliance timelines. “Getting licensed and compliant takes time. If you wait too long, you could miss out on your ideal assignment.”
Summer Travel Healthcare Trends
According to Brian, summer tends to bring specific needs across the board. “Every year we see a spike in demand for ER and ICU nurses,” he said. “And don’t forget about unique assignments – summer camp nursing opportunities pop up and are perfect for the right person.”
Where to Go This Summer
“There are places that really shine in the summer,” Brian said. “Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota – these are places travelers don’t always want to be in the winter, but come summer, the weather is beautiful and the jobs are plentiful.”
Of course, there are also some high-demand locations that fill fast. “Alaska is a big one,” Brian noted. “Everyone wants to go there in the summer. So, if it’s on your list, you have to be ready early. That means your license is in hand and you’re already working with your recruiter to be first in line when a job opens up.”
Housing Challenges
If there’s one thing travelers overlook, Brian says it’s housing. “Housing is always a big deal, but especially in summer. Places near college towns or tourist destinations tend to spike in cost and get booked quickly.”
His advice? “Try to secure your housing before you sign your contract. That way, you don’t have to back out of something great because you can’t find a place to live.”
The Perks of Summer Travel
There’s more to summer travel than just the paycheck. “Summer gives you more daylight, which means more time to explore,” Brian said. “You can hit up vineyards, hike in the evenings, check out local festivals – whatever your thing is, you just have more hours in the day to enjoy it.”
